5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, somebody brings something refreshingly new to this genre, June 29, 2012

I debated between giving this book 4 or 5 stars, mainly because there were a few things I would have liked the author to expand on, however, this is a series, so I opted for 5 stars knowing that most of my questions and concerns were likely to be addressed in the upcoming books. This was a very refreshing read, the story was different from most of the other books in this genre. She involved a little of some of the most intriguing mysteries throughout history and of the universe, and spun it in a way as to be the envy of Arachne herself (of course we all know how she ended up). Lately I've been coming across a lot of disappointing reads, books that promise to take an old idea and spin it in a new direction and fail miserably. This book made no such promises but it still succeeded spectacularly. The only mistakes I could find were a few editing mistakes, but that seems to be a common problem amongst the Kindle version of books so I won't hold that against it. All in all, I can't wait for the next books to find out where the author is going to take the story line.

Fan Fiction, what are your thoughts?

My mother recently sent me this article from the Wall Street Journal on Fan Fiction. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702303734204577464411825970488.html?mod=WSJ_topics_obama The weird World of Fan Fiction.

I found the article intriguing enough to blog about it. Fan Fiction is where fans of a book, movie, or TV series take those lovable characters and re-create them into a different world, scenario, or storyline. An entire website exists with millions of stories people have written based off their favorite characters. www.Fanfiction.com

I think this is hysterical, as a teacher I have been doing fan fiction with the kids and didn't even realize it. Every year I teach my favorite subject fairy tales, folk tales, and fables. The kids of course have to re-write a favorite fairy tale or folk tale into a different and creative storyline. It's an amazing way to teach creative writing by changing the setting, voices, plot, and conflict/ solution from a familiar story.

The article informs that some authors do not support fan fiction. They feel people are stealing what is theirs.

Personally, I cannot agree. I think it's great! As a writer myself, I know what it is to be a daydreamer. Often after I finish a book where I have fallen in love with the characters I dream up different storylines, or situations in my head with those same people. It’s a way to fill the void that is left after you finish the book and don’t have those characters in your life anymore. Nobody wants to say goodbye to their favorite characters. Therefore, we keep them fresh with new scenes in our heads. Some folks are writing down those scenes, and sharing them with others. More power to them.

If it were me, I would be honored  if someone fell in love with the characters in my books so much that they wanted to to use them in their story.

I'm curious to know what your thoughts and opinions are on fan fiction. Post your comments here:

    Superpower question

    Kids/Teens Book ClubFavorite Superpower - what's yours?
"I'm the Author of Men of the Cave. In the book, I have seven brothers all with one superpower each: speed, power to heal others, ability to see the past, present, and future, ability to communicate with animals, the ability to leave your body and take on spirit form, and telekinesis. Out of those powers, I would choose telekinesis because my closet is always a mess (Like Dion's room, it's bad) and I would love to be able to sit back and clean it with my mind.

I received this book from the author in e-pub. format.

I'm so glad I read this book. It was unique and once I started reading it I couldn't stop.

    Kasey is spending the
school year in Spain so that she can avoid her relationship with Teal, her ex-fiance. While in Spain Kasey meets Dion, an immortal with the ability to run extremely fast. It seems that Fate has brought them together because no matter what happens Kasey and Dion always find a way to make everything right between them.

So this book was good, really good. I don't think I normally read books like this because I've been trying to think of a similar book to this but so far I have yet to come up with another book.

The only reason this book didn't get five stars was for only two reasons. In the beginning of the book there is a lot of Spanish and I'm probably not the only person out there that doesn't understand Spanish. I chose to take French instead of Spanish so during the parts in the beginning when almost everyone was speaking Spanish I was kind of lost. But I didn't stay that way for long. After maybe a paragraph or two I could figure out what the person had said before so it wasn't all that bad. My other problem with the book was how Dion acted/talked. As I said before I loved all the characters but the way Dion spoke and acted was strange. I get that he's supposed to be really old because he's immortal but he didn't even try to sound like he was from this century. He was really formal and he sort of acted like a goody two-shoes. The only time he didn't was when he was fighting Sam and defending Kasey.

The good thing is that the good parts of the book far outweighed the parts that I didn't care for. I liked all the Kleon brothers, yes even the "evil" ones. And I really liked Kasey's brother Nolan even though I only got to know him through Kasey's
phone calls with him. And how could I forget the lovely family Kasey was staying with? I loved those characters too. I also really enjoyed the story. I really want to know how Kasey is related to Pandora and how the Kleon brothers are going to deal with Sam and James. I also liked how there wasn't really a love triangle and I sort of hope that it stays that way but I feel like there might be a love triangle between Kasey, Dion, and Teal.

Can't wait until the next book!
